The Clinical Toxicology Department / Hong Kong Poison Information Centre (CTD/HKPIC) provides round-the-clock poison information and poisoning-related clinical consultation service to health care professionals in Hong Kong since 2005. HKPIC is one of the two WHO-listed poison centres in China.
Approximately 4,000 poisoning cases were recorded by CTD/HKPIC in the year 2023/24
New development in 2023/24:
- Official opening of the Hong Kong Poison Control Centre (HKPCC) on 24th November 2023. HKPCC will be physically located in the new Ambulatory block of UCH.
- Establishment of Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine Treatment Safety Centre (ICWM-TSC) under HKPCC. Physically located in KEC, the ICWM-TSC serves as a collaborative platform for the Hospital Authority and local experts, dedicated to the research and development of clinical guidelines for the safe co-use of Chinese medicine and western drugs.
Other services include:
- Onsite clinical toxicology service to poisoned patients in UCH
- Stocking and advice on the use of level III antidotes and prehospital activated charcoal
- 2 toxicology clinics providing specialist care to patients referred from all HA and private doctors
CTD/HKPIC is the accredited poison centre for training in clinical toxicology, which is a recognised medical specialty in Hong Kong since 2016. Four doctors currently working in CTD/HKPIC hold the title of Fellow in Clinical Toxicology.
